The energy consumed for transportation uses up around 30% of the energy spent and accounts for more than 70% of the petroleum consumption in the world.

Electric vehicles have around 2 times the overall energy efficiency of their ICE counterparts. Rail vehicles typically have a CRF (Coefficient of Rolling Friction) of 0.001; whereas rubber tire vehicles usually have a CRF of 0.01 (10 times more). The ability to attach several wagons to a rail locomotive also reduces overall drag coefficient by about half. Moreover, rails allow for a very efficient, uninterrupted, and high capacity electric power transmission and charging while moving, thus reducing the battery dependency of the vehicles within the system.
